Is midwifery care safe?
Based on a study published in the British Medical Journal, Planned home birth for low risk women in North America using certified professional midwives was associated with lower rates of medical intervention but similar intrapartum and neonatal mortality to that of low risk hospital births in the United States.

What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?
A doula is professionally trained “to provide emotional and physical support to a woman and her partner throughout labor, delivery, and to some extent the postpartum period,” (Marshall Klaus and John Kennell).
A midwife is trained to provide primary maternity care to low risk women throughout pregnancy, labor and birth, and the first six weeks following the birth. She also provides emotional and physical support to a laboring woman and her partner.  Wisconsin law allows licensed midwives to provide maternity care to women with some risk factors while in consultation with a physician or nurse midwife.
